Your Home – Keeping Your Home Safe

Is it really Christmas already? It seems as if we were just preparing our decks for summer BBQs and now it is time to deck our halls with boughs of holly… my goodness, how time flies!

Well, since Christmas is quickly approaching, now is a great time to make sure your home is safe this holiday season. Many people travel for the holiday so that they can be around family and friends for this special time of year. If you are one of the people that will be leaving their home this holiday season, make sure you take the proper safety precautions to to protect your home against burglary and theft.

  • If you have someone in your area that you trust (a friend or family member) have them stop by your place, occasionally, just to check up on it while you are away.
  • Get a security system that, preferably, has the option for automatic timers so that you can arrange for specific lights to turn on at pre-set times. This can act as a deterrent and keep thieves away.
  • This tip might seem like commonsense but it should be said because with the hustle and bustle that often accompanies the holiday season (especially when paired with traveling), it can be easily overlooked – lock up your home and keep valuable object out of plane sight. Before leaving, double-check to make sure that all windows and doors are securely locked. Also, make sure that valuable items are locked away and not visible to people that may be able to see into your home.
  • Lastly, make sure you take all the kids with you! It may not seem as though this is a way to protect your home but it is – we’ve all seen Home Alone – some damaging things can occur when a child is left alone. In addition, forgetting a valuable member of the family trip can put a damper on the vacation you planned.

While these tips may be simple, they can also be easy to forget. Take some time to double-check your Christmas safety list before leaving for your holiday vacation – it will likely lead to a much more enjoyable time!
